Pier 97, a new open-air concert venue, was developed on the Hudson River near West 57th Street. Nearly a dozen concerts were scheduled during summer 2014. Prior to the first scheduled event, the structure elicited concerns from nearby residents regarding inevitable sound transmission to their homes.

To assess the impact, we established both exterior measurement locations around the concert venue as well as positions within residential apartments. Our measurement data captured ambient conditions during the evening rush hour before the concert began, then during two opening events and the main attraction. All data collected was analyzed and compared to the NYC Noise Code for commercial music, which establishes the maximum allowable sound levels at discrete one-third octave bands, as well as overall single figure levels. Our timely feedback provided residents with information necessary to support their concerns regarding the impact this concert venue has on the neighborhood noise levels.
